4. Jennifer Lopez Reportedly Near an 'American Idol' Deal

Filed under:

Ever since Ellen DeGeneres announced she was joining Simon Cowell in the great 'American Idol' judging exodus, rumors have swirled over who her replacement will be. Harry Connick, Jr.? Steven Tyler? Certainly not Jennifer Lopez, who last we heard was out of the running due to her over-the-top diva demands?

Well, now it appears that the show's producers may have finally settled on a new judge. The winner of the 'American Idol' sweepstakes is... oh. Actually, it's J-Lo after all.

Yes, it's (apparently) true: despite persistent rumors to the contrary, Jennifer Lopez is reportedly "in the final stages of negotiations with 'American Idol'" to become "the last critical link in the chain," according to the gossip mothership, TMZ.com.

6. Michelle Forbes Talks 'Durham County' and How She Wishes More People Watched It

Michelle Forbes is a rare breed of actor; ever the chameleon, she nomadically jumps from show to show, giving us just a taste of her ability. She then moves on to her next role to stun us once again. Most recently, Forbes played a maenad on vampire hit 'True Blood' and the icy Admiral Cain on 'Battlestar Galactica.'

One role that Forbes treasures is one you probably don't know her for, which is as demented psychologist Dr. Penelope Verrity in the second season of Canadian-made-and-produced 'Durham County.' It's a dark, dark role in an avant-garde show, and it mostly went under the radar.

TV Squad sat down with Forbes to discuss why she's done talking about 'Star Trek,' how she stays a TV nomad and why she wishes everyone knew about 'Durham County.'

7. Why 'Top Chef' Judge Eric Ripert Should Be Replaced With Anthony Bourdain

Eric Ripert and Anthony Bourdain judge 'Top Chef' - 'Gastro-nauts'
People haven't been overly kind to 'Top Chef' this season. Either they think the cheftestants are inept, the Washington, DC locale is uninspiring, the guest politicians are annoying or, like me, they think the show has just become stale and predictable.

But something else has come up recently that's been bugging me: the judging. Not so much what 'Top Chef' vets Padma Lakshmi and Tom Colicchio are doing; they're taking the same reasoned approach they always do. And when Gail Simmons is there, her criticism has always been constructive and kind.

No, I'm mostly looking at new judge Eric Ripert when I think the judging has suffered this year. He may be one of the greatest chefs and restaurateurs on the planet, but as a 'Top Chef' judge, he makes me long for the days when the oh-so-quippy Toby Young was subbing for Gail. Why do I think he's been so bad this year? Read on for my list of grievances...

8. The Stars of 'Private Practice' Talk Twitter (VIDEO)

'Grey's Anatomy' and 'Private Practice' boss lady Shonda Rhimes is one of my favorite people to follow on Twitter (hi @shondarhimes!). She answers fan questions in what can only be called entertaining bursts of rapid-fire tweeting, then often puts an abrupt end to things when she's sick of answering the same "when will AddiSam happen for real?" question over and over agian.

While we all know the 'Grey's' cast is pretty anti-Twitter, the gang over at 'Private Practice' is much more tech-savvy and loving the instant connection with the fans. I hit the 'Private Practice' set -- a full set visit video is coming closer to premiere -- and the amount of Twitter talk warranted its own post.

Kate Walsh (@k8_walsh) says she treats it like her diary, while Tim Daly (@TimmyDaly) says he can't stand people who do that. Amy Brenneman (@TheAmyBrenneman) gives us the real reason Taye Diggs won't tweet, while Taye just tries to come to terms with the word tweet. And Audra McDonald (@AudraEqualityMc) reminds us that sometimes there's more to the oft-maligned social media tool than meets the eye.

Also of note: Caterina Scorsone (@caterinatweets), a.k.a. Amelia Shepherd, is also on. And since my visit, KaDee Strickland (@KaDeeStrick) has joined the ranks as well. I'm not taking credit or anything, but ... well, you're welcome. Enjoy!

9. Talking TV Podcast: 'Mad Men,' 'Sons of Anarchy' and More

Filed under:

Talking TV podcastJust reading about television isn't enough, right? Don't you want to listen to people talking about it too? Sure you do.

Every week, Ryan McGee and I talk about all things television on the 'Talking TV with Ryan & Ryan' podcast, which can be found on iTunes, and starting this week, on Stay Tuned as well.

Each week there are two podcasts -- a 'Mad Men' edition and a non-'Mad Men' podcast. This week's guest for the 'Mad Men' podcast is Time TV critic James Poniewozik, and the three of us discussed the season so far and Sunday's episode, 'Waldorf Stories,' in particular.

10. Has 'Saturday Night Live' Found a New Barack Obama in Comedian Jay Pharoah?

Filed under:

Comedian Jay PharoahCould 'Saturday Night Live' have found a fourth new hire? If the most recent buzz in comedy circles is to be believed, one of the reported new cast members could already be getting a promotion -- to President.

According to blogger Sean McCarthy of "The Comics' Comic," comedian Jay Pharoah "is just about a done deal" to join the cast of the 36th season of 'SNL' later this month. Taran Killam, Paul Brittain and Vanessa Bayer are all rumored to be joining the cast as well. The most interesting part of this news is that Pharoah will bring a host of characters and impressions to the show, including a new and fresh take on President Barack Obama,

McCarthy doesn't have a solid confirmation that 'SNL' will impeach Fred Armisen from the Obama role and replace him with Pharoah, but noted that it's the most likely scenario. TV Squad has found a video of Pharoah's Obama impersonation, posted after the jump.

11. EXCLUSIVE: 'Jerseylicious' Season 2 Sneak Peek

Filed under:

You better watch out on the floor of the Gatsby Salon in 'Jerseylicious' this year -- or you just may get clipped.

An exclusive season 2 clip of the Style Network reality series shows an altercation between Tracy and a person who appears to be Olivia. We can't exactly tell because the fists and hair are flying so ferociously.

Anyway, Olivia will definitely in the middle of a major plotline this season: the tug of war between Gatsby-owner Gayle and Alexa, the Glam Fairy who's intent on using her influence in the 'Jerseylicious' salon.

"Myself and Alexa have a little confrontation,'' Jerseylicious' Gayle Giacomo told TV Squad. "We're different, business-wise.''

12. Eliminated 'Top Chef: DC' Contestant Talks About the 'Emotional Roller Coaster'

Top Chef DCThere was a lot more at stake in last night's episode of 'Top Chef: DC' than usual. And, while bonus prizes like a new car, a trip to London and getting to see the Space Shuttle launch were nice incentives, it was the thrill of going to Singapore for the finales that really lit a fire under the remaining cheftestants.

Unfortunately, as Kevin said, "there's five chefs left and only four seats to Singapore. That fifth person, the one that's not going, is going to be crushed." True enough. Read on to get the details.

Warning: Spoiler Alert!

13. Jerry Lewis on Lindsay Lohan: 'I Would Smack Her in the Mouth!' (VIDEO)

Filed under:

We're not going to say this clip makes Jerry Lewis seem like an angry, half-crazed old man, because we're afraid he might hit us.

On 'Inside Edition' (weekdays, syndicated), Lewis went on a tirade against young Hollywood and said that Lindsay Lohan needs a "smack in the mouth" followed by a firm spanking to set her straight.

14. 'Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution' Renewed

Filed under:

Jamie OliverCouldn't get enough of 'Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution' the first time around? You'll be able to join British chef Jamie Oliver for a second season, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

ABC has ordered six more episodes of the the Emmy-winning show, but with a slight format change. While the first season focused on Oliver's efforts to completely overhaul the lunch program at a school in West Virginia, season 2 will see him hit up schools, offices, homes and restaurants in Los Angeles.

15. Professional Organizer Dorothy Breininger Talks 'Hoarders' Season 3 And Shares Clutter Control Tips

Image from the season 3 premiere of 'Hoarders' on A&EI can't say I enjoy watching 'Hoarders.' In fact, it is probably one of the most difficult shows on television to sit through. Still, like so many of you, I am addicted to the A&E series, which kicks off a third season of extreme clutter control with two new back-to-back episodes on Mon., Sept. 6 at 9PM ET.

"Season 3 is by far the most emotional season," said Dorothy Breininger, a professional organizer and consulting producer on the show who dares to enter the homes of hoarders all across America. "Before we were dealing with people who had stuff. Now we're dealing with people who have no other choice but to get rid of their stuff -- if they don't, they'll lose their homes and their families. This is it for them."

Read on as Breininger, who is also president and founder of the Delphi Center for Organization, spoke to TV Squad about the show and offered tips on how to let go of the stuff that is drowning not just hoarders but all of us living in a society in which we just can't get enough.

16. Better Watch Those Last Two 'Better Off Ted' Episodes

Oh, 'Better Off Ted' and 'Party Down,' why did you have to be so good? You made most other comedies seem leaden and false by comparison.

Fans of 'Better Off Ted' had to put up with a lot during its two-season run, which ended in cancellation. The critically acclaimed show was mostly ignored by ABC, despite the fact that it developed into an increasingly hilarious workplace comedy.

You'd have thought the biggest indignity faced by Ted and the crew at Veridian Dynamics was ABC's cracked-out scheduling of the show (season 2 premiered in December, one of television's most fatal dead zones, and one episode aired on New Year's Day, which is almost the same as not airing at all).

But no, there were more indignities to come. ABC held on to the final two episodes of the show like a corporate executive clutching a bonus check. The network even teased us earlier in the summer by scheduling a tentative airdate for the episodes, which was of course rescinded.

18. Why Bringing Neil Gaiman's 'Sandman' to TV is a Bad Idea

Battle stations, comic-book nerds: A possible TV adaptation of Neil Gaiman's 'The Sandman' is in the works.

This is probably a bad idea.

Of course, this adaptation is still in the early stages, and as is the case with most properties being developed for television, it's entirely possible (if not probable) that the project will never get made.

Still, there are quite a few reasons to treat the idea of a TV version of 'Sandman,' which tells the story of the Dream (or Morpheus) and his similarly powerful siblings, with extreme caution. I say that despite reading that 'Supernatural' creator Eric Kripke may take the lead role in the development of the 'Sandman' series.

Those who've read my work in the past will know that I'm a serious 'Supernatural' fan, and whatever ups and downs that show may have had over the past five seasons, Kripke's ability to mine the moral and emotional potential of genre fare has proved to be exceptional.

So it's not that I think Kripke (who isn't officially on board yet) isn't the right guy for the job. It's just that I'm not sure the job can or should be done. After the jump are just five of the reasons why I think a 'Sandman' adaptation is probably a bad idea.

20. Meet The Carpio Family, Stars of TLC's 'Sextuplets Take New York'

Filed under:

sextuplets_take_new_york_TLCCarpe diem means seize the day. For the family that's the focus of TLC's new reality show, 'Sextuplets Take New York,' that phrase could be changed to Carpio diem.

The Carpio family consists of two loving parents, one 10-year-old, and six 23-month-old babies. Each day is a challenge that they seize with love, understanding and determination to succeed.

'Sextuplets Take New York' premieres Sept. 14 at 10PM on TLC, and if it seems like it might be similar to 'Jon & Kate Plus Eight,' that's no coincidence. Both shows have the same producers.
